Executive order to shelter in place signed, released

Starting at 6 p.m. Friday and until 11:59 p.m. April 13, all residents of Georgia are ordered to shelter in place, or stay at home, unless they leave to conduct essential business, maintain minimal business operations or to obtain necessary supplies.

Confirmed cases in Hart drop to three

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hart County dropped to three in Wednesday evening’s statewide status update and stayed that way in the noon report Thursday.  Meanwhile, Stephens and Franklin counties’ numbers moved up to five cases and Madison’s is at four.

Sheriff: Man in van fled deputies on three tires

A man who fled law enforcement in a high-speed chase through Hartwell on just three tires Thursday, March 26, before crashing into another vehicle near Royston is now facing at least three felony charges.

Over the past three weeks, the Rev. Allen Stewart has transitioned from preaching in front of a crowd of more than 400 people, to gazing over empty pews while he delivers his sermon at First United Methodist Church in Hartwell. “It’s hard to preach to an empty church,” Stewart said.

Unemployment claims are “skyrocketing” across the state, according to a Georgia Department of Labor spokesperson, eclipsing numbers seen during the Great Recession less than a month after the Georgia Mountains region saw one of its best months on record for employment.
