Ninth District Opportunity, Inc. has been awarded federal funds under The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Hart County has been chosen to receive $7133 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Bowersville sets alcohol license fees

The price for an alcohol license in Bowersville has been set. The Bowersville Town Council voted unanimously at its regular meeting on Jan. 22 to set the beer and wine license fee at $1,000, along with an application fee of $300. The license fee is set at the max amount the state allows.

YMCA pavilion gets a facelift

The soccer pavilion at the Bell Family YMCA in Hartwell received a facelift this past week. The large wooden roof of the pavilion was missing boards and had several weakened posts that created safety issues.

Hazmat suits required in animal cruelty arrest

A Hartwell man is facing multiple aggravated animal cruelty charges after hazmat suits were used by police to search his home. “It was awful,” Hartwell Assistant Police Chief Stan Sayer said. “That’s the worst case I’ve ever worked with animal cruelty.

Authorities raid alleged cockfights

A cockfighting ring left multiple roosters dead before deputies shut it down over the weekend. The Hart County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 45 Andrea Road around 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, after an informant told deputies about a possible chicken fight taking place.

Life was different for people in rural Hart County 70 years ago, something lifelong resident Libby Forbes knows well after growing up in the Montevideo area. Forbes grew up 10 miles from Hartwell and 15 miles from Elberton, but the dirt roads to town were not traveled very often.
