Powell eyes virus, elections in session

The Georgia General Assembly will face new problems this year according to State Rep. Alan Powell, R - Hartwell. The Georgia legislature will be looking at both election reform as well as vaccine distribution as top priorities.

VFW namesakes remembered

Patrick Wireman, the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Hartwell, wanted to find the burial site of the namesakes of the local chapter — Enoch and Knox Scales — so he went looking. “We wanted to find out who Enoch and Knox were, as much information as we could,” Wireman said.

Liquor license, camping fees set

The Hart County Board of Commissioners has a new member and a new chairman and Payne’s Creek Campground has a new rate schedule. Michael Bennett was sworn in and assumed the seat to represent District 1 on the board at Tuesday’s first meeting of 2021.

Jan, 14, 1921— L.B. Carlton announced that they would be opening the first cash-and-carry grocery store in Hartwell. Cash stores had already been successful in other cities such as Elberton, Marietta and Athens. In Atlanta, Rogers and Piggly Wiggly alone numbered around 200 stores.

A newspaper publisher with Hartwell roots has published a new book of columns from his 20-year career as a small-town Georgia publisher, including tales from his days in Hartwell.

Schools accredited, board recognized as exemplary

The Hart County Charter System earned accreditation again recently with a score that jumped by 50 points from the previous evaluation, making it one of the highest scores evaluators saw. The announcement was made by Superintendent Jay Floyd at the board of education’s regular meeting on Jan.
