The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests: Dec. 30 • Robert Lee Crocker, 56, 133 Cann Road, Anderson, S.C., was arrested and charged with two counts of felony theft by shoplifting (HPD).

City passes tire rule, retirement plan

The Hartwell City Council passed a new tire ordinance and retirement plan for city employees at its first meeting of 2021. The tire management ordinance was passed after being tabled several times to make adjustments. The ordinance will dictate how tire dealers in Hartwell can store their tires.

County officials to look at ordinances, roads

Hart County Board of Commissioners’ officials are setting their sights on several policy changes, improving roads and potentially courting new manufacturing businesses in the new year. Board chairman Joey Dorsey told The Sun recently the commissioners need to review and update several ordinances.

Firefighter arrested on theft charges

A Hart County firefighter allegedly stole more than $3,000 from a local fire station, Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials say. Nicholas Benjamin Leard, 38, of Lavonia, was arrested and charged with five counts of felony theft by taking on Jan. 4.

City eyes more growth in 2021

Hartwell mayor Brandon Johnson is looking for Hartwell to rebound in 2021 after a year in which COVID made progress difficult. “We thought 2020 was going to be our year, but with COVID, that overshadowed a lot of things,” Johnson said. “We did really well all things considered.

The novel coronavirus pandemic is bringing to light a problem that has been discussed for years in Hart County — the size of its jail.

Just getting through 2020 was a major accomplishment for the city of Hartwell, according to city manager Jon Herschell. “Never would I have ever thought we would work from home, that we would have to close city hall for a couple weeks,” Herschell said. “It’s just been a wild ride.
