Party will reinforce lessons

First graders at Hartwell Elementary School will be reviewing their units with a twist. Teacher Meghan Harris likes to throw review parties for her students, but thanks to the Bright Idea grant she can now do the party for the whole grade.

Grant supports math education at home

Second-grade teacher Andrea Gibbs is providing her Hartwell Elementary students with the tools to make learning at home easier. With money from a Hart EMC Bright Ideas Grant, Gibbs plans to buy 24 take-home math manipulative sets for her students.

Oct. 13, 1939 — Forty lights on 10 poles were installed at the then Hartwell High School athletic fields. These were the first lights installed at the fields and people at the time were excited about the possibility of scheduling night games.

Housing initiative moving forward

More affordable housing could be coming to Hartwell. Michelle Wetherbee, the team lead for The Georgia Initiative for Community Housing presented an update on what the program has been working on at the Hartwell City Council meeting on Oct. 12.

County to lease Payne’s Creek

The operation of Payne’s Creek Campground could soon change hands. The Hart County Board of Commissioners moved Tuesday night to lease the camp site from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who faced budget challenges with the park recently and considered closing it.

The Hart County Training School educated generations of Hartwell’s Black youth before it closed in 1970.
