Earth Day turns 53 Saturday

Earth Day is 53 years old! Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson started Earth Day in 1970. His goal was to bring to our attention the environmental issues that our planet faces. The book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson, published in 1962, was a major catalyst for Earth Day.

It was the idea of a family gathering around one table for a meal that Kristin Joyner fell in love with. Now, she and fellow members of TORCH of Hartwell are bringing the table out of the dining room and into Railroad Street Park, and they’re pulling up 200 chairs for the family.
The Hartwell Makers Festival will fill Carolina Street on the block that runs from Howell to Depot Streets, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on April 29, with live music from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

What has now become a premier showcase of handmade crafts for the region, the Hartwell Makers Festival was originally thought to be a one-time event. “We really didn’t know,” said festival co-founder Stephanie Crump.

The Georgia General Assembly returned to the State Capitol for the final two days of the 2023 legislative session on Monday, March 27, and on Wednesday, March 29. This marks the start of a 40-day window for Gov. Kemp to decide which measures he will sign into law, and which he will veto.

With his smooth guitar play and thoughtful original songs, Doug Deming and The Jewel Tones are bringing the blues back to Hartwell this weekend. Deming and his band are set to make their return to the High Cotton Music Hall tomorrow, April 14 at 8 p.m.
The annual Hart County Botanical Gardens plant sale will take place Saturday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. variety of plants, shrubs, natives, perennials, and annuals, including some unusual and difficult to find offerings will be featured. This year a sizable selection of transplants from Friends of the Garden’s yards will be offered at very reasonable prices.
