June 20, 1930 — A Hartwell man had a “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” moment when he reeled in three fish on one hook simultaneously. L.S. Long Jr., of Hartwell, was fishing in the Black River near Kingstree in South Carolina when he hooked three fish at one time.

Larry Roebuck is loving life

God gave Larry Roebuck a wakeup call in the early 2000s.  Roebuck was driving a truck carrying a load of eggs when the load shifted, taking the entire rig with it. The truck turned on its side and pinned his left arm underneath it.

Grownup prom to benefit REACH Hart

The second-annual REACH Hart Prom for Grownups is set to return on July 21 with a “Great Gatsby” theme.  The inaugural event in 2019 was successful in its support of the REACH Hart Community Education Foundation, said foundation director Anna Hall.  “Last year went very well,” Hall said.

City: Ridge Rd. plat annexed despite county's claim

Despite county commissioners questioning the legality of it, city officials say a recent annexation request from a developer is complete and the property is annexed into Hartwell, while a separate effort by the city to annex Hartwell Lakeside is still in limbo.

Teen drowns in Lake Hartwell over weekend

An 18-year-old Boy Scout drowned in Lake Hartwell on June 13. Authorities discovered the body of Stephen Bowman, 18, of Cornelia, several hours after law enforcement was called to investigate at Camp Rotary Boy Scout Camp off of Rotary Boyscout Drive in Reed Creek.
