Spay, neuter programs seek fewer homeless pets

The Hart County Humane Society is urging people to spay and neuter their pets, especially cats, as the number of kittens the no-kill shelter is seeing spikes.  Donna Madkiff, of the humane society, said the area is suffering through another horrendous kitten season.

Vietnam wall could come to Hart

American Legion Post 109 in Hartwell has begun the process to bring The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall to Hartwell, but volunteers and donations will be needed to make the experience the best it can be, organizers say.

Board of education hears options for school year

Several scenarios for how local schools will return to classrooms in the fall are being planned by the Hart County Board of Education. Superintendent Jay Floyd explained at the board’s regular meeting Monday night that “it’s the time to plan, but it’s not the time to make a decision.

County 'strongly opposes' annexation

Annexation efforts by the city of Hartwell are being put on pause after county commissioners sent a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers “strongly opposing” the annexation of Hartwell Lakeside into city limits, and accusing the city of acting illegally in a separate annexation request.

Incumbents sweep Hart County elections

Incumbents ruled the day in the local primary election held Tuesday, June 9.  All three incumbents in locally contested races up for grabs in the Republican and Democratic primaries defeated their opponents and many others walked back into their seats again uncontested.

Hartwell protests: Demonstration calls for end to police violence

Chants for justice and an end to police brutality rang out in the streets of Hartwell on Friday as more than 150 protestors gathered on the courthouse square in the wake of national protests sparked by the death of George Floyd.
