Hartwell Elementary to be renovated

The Hart County Board of Education took its first step on Monday toward renovating Hartwell Elementary School. “I know we’ve been talking about it for a couple of years and we discussed it in depth at the board retreat,” Superintendent Jay Floyd said at the board’s regular meeting on Monday.

Orphans must find family wherever they can. That is a lesson Bowersville resident Vonnie Bentley Brown was forced to learn early in life. The family she knew until she was 10 years old was torn apart by tragedy on a chilly and rainy October day in 1962 in Morganton, N.C.

HartOberFest to bring music, fun to downtown Hartwell

Southern Hart Brewing Company will host the first ever HartOberFest on Oct. 26, on Carolina St. in downtown Hartwell. The event will consist of a beer garden, live music, and many local vendors including a bouncy house and face painting. The event will kick-off at 10 a.m.

Community garden seeks help for fence

The Hart County Community Garden needs help putting a fence around its garden plots to keep out deer. The  garden, located on Benson St., is set up to give people who don’t have a place to garden the opportunity to rent out a small plot for the growing season.

Teacher does it for the 'light-bulb moments'

Emilee Patrick loves what she calls the “light-bulb moments,” those times when she sees her fifth-grade students learn something new. Plenty of those moments were on full display on Oct. 10 at the Agriscience Center during North Hart Elementary School’s Invention Convention.

“As you can tell, I like to sing,” Kate Hobson said over the phone on her way to the airport to fly into Washington D.C. recently. Kate not only likes to sing, but she has also been recognized nationally for her vocal prowess.

Band competition set for Saturday

Hart County High School will host the Lake Hartwell Marching Competition this weekend.   Twenty-five high school bands will be performing at Herndon Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting at 11:40 a.m. until 9:10 p.m. The competition will serve as a fundraiser for  the Hart County band.
