Hartwell to make final payment on city hall

Hartwell City Hall will be paid off in full after the city council authorized the final payment at the Dec. 7 meeting. The payment of $26,400 will pay off the $3.6 million project that was completed in 2012. “Usually what you do is burn the note,” mayor Brandon Johnson said.

New sailboat honors city workers, helpers

A new sailboat will adorn the sidewalk in front of the Hartwell City Hall and will honor city workers. The sailboat, painted by Debbie Gurley and Angela Short, depicts the city hall and city workers from each department.

Hartwell will soon have two new dining establishments from which to choose, but they are on different schedules for opening their doors. Guthrie’s, which specializes in chicken fingers, is expected to open soon on Franklin Street.

Mobile home fire claims life of Hart County man

A fatal fire in Hart County may have been caused by an improperly placed space heater, officials say. John David Yates, 58, was killed Sunday, Dec. 6, at his home, 64 Marshal Dove Road in Hartwell, in a fire that destroyed the residence. When Hart County firefighters arrived around 6 p.m.

A record-breaking surge in COVID-19 cases locally is prompting a local doctor to speak out as hospitals are hitting capacity. Hart County hit a record number of single-day cases reported on Dec. 4 when 24 new cases were reported, according to the Department of Public Health.
