VFW Post 8076 named back-to-back Post of the Quarter

Members of VFW Post 8076 Hartwell and Post 8076 Auxiliary attended the VFW Department of Georgia District 2 quarterly meeting Aug. 6, at VFW Post 5456, Elberton. VFW Post 8076 was honored to be named back-to-back District 2 Top Post of the Quarter for our outstanding community service.
The new temporary home for the American flag drop box is at the 911 Center on Chandler Street. The box was moved due to the construction on the new firehouse and this location has very easy access for drop off. The American Legion will recover and give a proper disposal of American flags.

Since construction of the new City of Hartwell Fire Station began, the American Flag drop off box, which had been located at the entrance of the fire station parking lot, has been moved to the Hart County Emergency 911 Center located at 800 Chandler St.

North Hart Elementary School principal resigns following comment

North Hart Elementary School (NHES) Principal Haley Smith has resigned from her position, effective Aug. 31. Smith’s resignation was approved by the Hart County Board of Education Aug. 14. Current NHES Assistant Principal Christina Weir was also approved to be the acting principal, beginning Aug.

Weekend search parties in Hart County for a missing White County man were unsuccessful. Douglas Cordell Barnes, 36, of Cleveland has not been seen or heard from since July 19. His gold Ford F150 crew cab truck was found abandoned by Hart County Sheriff’s deputies on Ga.

The Georgia Secretary of State’s Securities Division is investigating a number of complaints made by Hart County citizens, and reported by The Hartwell Sun in March, regarding the condition of Nancy Hart Memorial Gardens.

Heaton to compete in Bassmaster National Championship for Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS – Next week, Aug. 7-12,  five Emmanuel Bass teams will be fishing the BASSMASTER College National Championship on Pickwick Lake in Counce, Tn. These anglers have worked hard this year to qualify for this prestigious event.
Freshman pitcher Chesnee Strickland pitched and also went 2 for 3 driving in the lone run in the Lady Dogs 10-1 loss to Jackson County on Aug. 8.

After a competitive two innings of play, Jackson County’s offense produced a six run inning in the third and a three run inning in the sixth to run rule the Lady Dogs in six innings, 10-1. The Lady Dogs opened up their season with a road trip to Jackson County to take on the Lady Panthers.
