Hartwell traffic is on city council’s radar

Traffic is a growing concern among some residents in Hartwell, but the city may not be able to do much to tackle the big projects on its own. In a recent poll on The Hartwell Sun’s Facebook page, 84 percent of respondents who voted considered traffic a problem in Hartwell.

Leadership Hart Youth continues entertainment efforts

If you drive around Hartwell on any given day, you won’t see a bowling alley, a mini-golf course or even a movie theater. You’ll have to drive more than 20 miles to either Anderson, Toccoa or Athens for that kind of entertainment.

Stolen 4-wheeler reclaimed by owners

Tim and Janice Mize thought they might never see their four-wheeler again after it was stolen in December, but Hart County Sheriff’s deputies made sure the couple’s property was returned. Now, authorities are searching for the alleged thief.

The AARP Tax-Aide program will be available in Hartwell for the 27th consecutive year. Tax-Aide provides free tax preparation service, including electronic filing of both federal and state — Georgia and South Carolina — returns during the tax season.

Wine, cheese, jazz event to return

The Friends of Hart County Library will host their annual “Wine, Cheese and a Little Jazz” event at 6 p.m. on Jan. 30 at the Art Center in Hartwell. As the name of the event implies, people can expect wine and cheese to be served at the event.

Jan. 5, 1951 — Selective Service drafted 15 Hart County men at the start of the year in 1951 during the Korean War. The U.S. Army ordered 80,000 men be drafted due to an increasing need for manpower, The Hartwell Sun reported.

Commissioners plan reelection bids

Hart County Commissioners Joey Dorsey and Marshall Sayer both announced at the Hart County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14, that they will run for reelection this year. Dorsey, current chairman of District 5, has been in office since 2001.
