Chase exceeds 100 mph, nets drug arrest

A man is behind bars after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through Hartwell exceeding 100 m.p.h. in a 45 m.p.h. zone last Saturday morning. Saverio Antonious Belton, 25, 287 Finley Street, Anderson, S.C., was arrested on Feb.

Hart County Habitat for Humanity will host a Women Build Weekend with a Women Build community outreach project on Saturday, March 7 and a Women Build Faith Fashion Show on Friday, March 6. Women Build is a national Habitat for Humanity project that is sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement store.

Hart County Probate Court Judge Merry Kirk will run for reelection this year. Kirk, who has served in the role since 2014, said she enjoys her job and that she hopes to serve the community where she was raised for another four years. “I truly love my job,” she said.

Hart County Clerk of Superior Court Frankie Gray announced recently he is seeking re-election to the office he’s held since 2009. A Hart County native, Gray said he took office as a 39-year-old man “scared to death.

Feb. 13, 1925 — A Hartwell man was hailed as a hero after a submarine wrecked in New Hampshire during a snow storm. On the U.S. Submarine S-48, and named as one of the heroes of the incident, was wireless operator Joel Dickerson, son of Mr. Wm. C. Dickerson, of Hartwell near Liberty Hill Church.
