For the 13th year, hundreds of Hart County residents flocked to the Hart County Ag. Center to support the Tony Hilton Low Country Boil Fundraiser and enjoy a fresh meal in the name of child literacy.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests: May 4 • Rita Fay Cunningham, 46, 217 Pierce Brown Road, was arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated assault and third-degree cruelty to children.

Gardens of Hart set for May 22

Plant and garden enthusiasts have the opportunity to tour five private Hart County gardens during the Gardens of Hart Tour on Saturday, May 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The tour is a fundraiser for the Hart County Botanical Garden and will be held rain or shine.

A ‘Day for Rome and Richardson’

The Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH) is wanting to hear what the residents of the Rome and Richardson area want for their community. GICH is holding a “Day for Rome and Richardson,” a public event on  May 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Schools name Teachers of the Year

Five teachers were recognized for their outstanding work by being named this year’s teachers of the year. One teacher in every school receives the award after being voted for by their peers. Mike Carey, construction teacher at Hart County High School, was named teacher of the year at his school.

School system weighs substitute teacher issue

Substitute teachers in Hart County could soon be employed by an outside company, rather than the school system, in an attempt to solve issues related to finding substitutes. The Hart County Board of Education voted 5-0 on Monday, May 11 to have the system contract with ESS Substitute Staffing.

Local nurse practitioner honored for pandemic efforts

Ruth Daniel, a nurse practitioner operating in Anderson, Lavonia and elsewhere in the region, received the rarely-awarded Service Above Self award from the Rotary Club of Hartwell last week.
