Historic heat wave hits Hart, region

The Hartwell area has dealt with extreme temperatures and droughts before, but it has been a while. According to National Weather Service archives, 2008 was the last time the area saw early-to-mid June temperatures reaching weekly averages consistently in the 90’s.

Driver of 18-wheeler killed in single-vehicle wreck

Update: Multiple agencies in Hart and Franklin counties responded on the evening of June 8 to a fatal single-truck collision near Exit 177, across from the old Dad’s Restaurant in Hart County. A call came in at 4:54 p.m.

High School hosts basketball camp

Hart County High School hosted it’s annual basketball summer camp last week. The camp was from May 30 to June 2 and included ages ranging Pre-K age to soon to be 8th graders. Coach Mike Edwards said there were 137 students in attendance this year.

Twisters show out at regional meet

The Hartwell Twisters Gymnastics Team competed in the Southern Regional AAU Gymnastics Championships in Daytona, Florida on May 21 and 22. There was a lot of competition at the regional, but the girls showed up and did great.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests: May 31 •Shikita L. Ross, 40, of Hartwell, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

Applicant proposes cryptocurrency mining farm at old Tenneco plant; city council responds with moratorium

On June 6, the Hartwell City Council heard a business proposal to establish a cryptocurrency mining farm at the old Tenneco plant in Hartwell. Council reacted by placing a 90-day moratorium on crypto-mining farms, citing a desire to get a better understanding of the topic.

Hart Middle Schooler to attend national conference

Samantha Wilson of Bowman, Georgia will be attending the Junior National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. Wilson will join middle school students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience.
