YMCA to introduce youth to pickleball

The Bell Family YMCA is offering a youth pickleball camp to introduce kids to the new sport sweeping the county. The camp will be held July 25 through 28 at the YMCA in Hartwell. “We’re pretty much trying to introduce pickleball to the youth,” sports manager Kervens Augustin said.

Hart alum named to honorary national football team

Hart County High School graduate Peyton Powell was named to the 2022 National Football Foundation Team of Distinction. The National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame (NFF) chose 81 members for the honorary team from a pool of 3,500 scholar-athletes from a nationwide Chapter Network.

Little League falls in finals; Hart to host state tourney

District Little League tournaments came to an end on Monday with Hart County Little League baseball losing  against Toccoa. The District 7 Little League Tournament began on Thursday, July 7 at the Hart County Recreation Department with Hart County beating Franklin, 18-4.

HCHS coach to be inducted into Georgia Southern Hall of Fame

Hart County High School football and girls track coach Taz Dixon was recently announced as a new member of the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame. Dixon played football at Georgia Southern from 1986 to 1989 and set six school records while on the team.

Local trainer sets records in powerlifting meet

A 68-year-old Hartwell man set three state records at a local powerlifting meet. David Leard, a fitness trainer at the Bell Family YMCA, competed in his first USPA powerlifting meet in Toccoa on June 25 and set three state records in his age  and weight group of 82.5 kg Master 65-69.

Runners take on new historic Hartwell 5K

An idea that stemmed from a passion for running turned into a new 5K race in Hartwell. Race director Brad Cuevas said the first annual Historic  Hartwell 5K was a big success on Saturday, July 2. “We started out with a goal of 40 people.

Football competes at camp in Habersham

The Hart County High School football players put on their pads for a two-day camp in Habersham County on June 22 and 23. The team competed against  Morgan County, Habersham Central and Madison County at the camp.

Soccer players gather to practice through the summer

The Hart County soccer program is holding 7-on-7 scrimmages throughout the summer to keep middle and high school athletes engaged in the sport. “It’s just an opportunity for us to keep working on building our Hart County soccer community and culture,” head boys soccer coach Benjamin Hudson said.

YMCA, high school keeping campers active

Kids worked on their skills at the new volleyball camp at Hart County High School and at basketball camp at the YMCA this past week. There will be no camps next week, but the YMCA will host a Positions Soccer Camp on July 5-8.

Hart County High School hosts youth softball camp

The Hart County High School softball team held a camp on June 20 and 21 to help youth players hone their skills. The camp lasted from 8 to 11:30 a.m. both days and the campers worked on skills such as hitting, pitching, bunting, fielding and base running.
