Mosquitoes make their presence felt in many areas each summer. These pesky, often hungry insects can carry disease, and their bites can be painful and itchy. Hearing the buzz of a mosquito can often be the buzzkill to an outdoor gathering to enjoy the otherwise nice weather.

There’s something special about those Wally’s Boys

G-Day kickoff for the 2023 Georgia Bulldogs was not until 4 on Saturday afternoon. But before 8 that morning, a special group of Dawgs started filling Athens Country Club’s banquet hall. They are celebrated as “Wally’s Boys,” Bulldogs who strapped on helmets for Coach Wally Butts.

A new group of REACH, or Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen, Scholars are set to graduate this year at Hart County High School and were recently celebrated at the annual REACH Hart barbecue.

Earth Day turns 53 Saturday

Earth Day is 53 years old! Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson started Earth Day in 1970. His goal was to bring to our attention the environmental issues that our planet faces. The book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson, published in 1962, was a major catalyst for Earth Day.

Taste of Hartwell to debut April 29

It was the idea of a family gathering around one table for a meal that Kristin Joyner fell in love with. Now, she and fellow members of TORCH of Hartwell are bringing the table out of the dining room and into Railroad Street Park, and they’re pulling up 200 chairs for the family.
The Hartwell Makers Festival will fill Carolina Street on the block that runs from Howell to Depot Streets, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on April 29, with live music from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Makers Festival pays it forward

What has now become a premier showcase of handmade crafts for the region, the Hartwell Makers Festival was originally thought to be a one-time event. “We really didn’t know,” said festival co-founder Stephanie Crump.

Housing moratorium remains complex

The ongoing moratorium’s effect on plans for a potential apartment complex in Hartwell claimed much of the discussion during the April 11 Hart County Board of Commissioners’ meeting.
