Saluting spring sports seniors

No region champions were won. No state champions were crowned. And no bragging rights from intense rivalry match ups will be thrown in the faces of foes. The 2020 spring sports season has been anything but normal with coronavirus-prompted cancellations — actually, it was nearly non-existent.

Kimberly Brown CNI Special Publications Douglas Whiddon of Cleveland has been named winner of the cover photo contest for the spring edition of Lake Living magazine. Whiddon snapped his winning photo of a sailboat in the sunset at Lake Lanier after a weekly sailboat race.

As veteran James Fulghum setup the American Legion Post 109’s wreath placed annually at the Veterans of All Wars Memorial on the courthouse lawn, he stood by himself, rather than with many other legion members as he normally would.

Arrests cut camping trip short

A group of alleged thieves appeared to have their camping trip cut short Friday, May 15, when authorities arrested three people for a suspected string of break-ins that happened last Thursday night.

Farmer's market to return May 23

The Hartwell Farmer’s Market is coming back May 23.  Shirley Johnson, who is a vendor at the market, said the pandemic closures impacted the spring opening of the market, but since restrictions have eased it is time to start again.

May 17, 1918 — A pair of Hartwell soldiers landed in France, while the first Georgia man injured in World War I returned home. Oscar A. Teasley Jr. and Will Gaines, both of Hartwell, arrived safely in France where the war was raging, The Sun reported.
