Hart Co. superintendent proposes millage decrease

School officials are hoping to be able to lower property taxes in Hart County this year. During a discussion about the fiscal year 2022 budget at the Hart County Board of Education’s regular meeting Monday night, Hart County Superintendent Jay Floyd presented revenue estimates for the school system.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests: April 14 • Tyler Brice Alewine, 31, 1910 Vanna Road, Royston, was arrested and charged with DUI, endangering a child by DUI, failure to drive within a single lane, open container and violation of window tint law.

Gold Star marker to be dedicated

A patriotic event is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m. on the Veteran’s Memorial Grounds located at 165 West Franklin Street in Hartwell, Georgia.   This solemn event is the rededication of the Blue Star Marker and the dedication of the Gold Star Marker.

Farmer’s Market opening May 1

   The Farmer’s Market will open from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, May 1, in The Hartwell Sun parking lot. (We will only be open on Saturdays.) There will be lettuce, spinach, sugar peas, onions, pecans, arugula, cilantro, pies, jelly, plants, jewelry, and more. All local farmers are welcome.

Veteran honored with diploma

Command Sergeant Major Joe T. Hill was honored Monday night at the Hart County Board of Education meeting with a Hart County High School Diploma. After dropping out of Hart County High School in 1963 to have a job to help his family, Hill served in the military for three decades in the U.S. Army.

Wakefield Farm hosts college trip

Dr. Leslie Fordham’s animal science students took a trip to Wakefield Farm in Hartwell on Friday, April 16. Wakefield Farm general manager Scott Fleming gave the students a lesson on raising cattle and took the students on a tour of the farm. The trip was facilitated by Georgia Archway program.

Farm Bureau announces art, poster contest winners

The Hart County Farm Bureau recently announced the winners of its first-grade coloring contest and fifth- grade poster contest. The contests are designed to promote agricultural literacy in elementary schools.

Annexation proposal moves forward

A proposed residential development is one step closer to reality after a joint meeting between the city and county governments Tuesday night. The Hartwell City Council met with the Hart County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, April 20 at city hall to discuss the city’s request to annex 22.
