House approves bill requiring mandatory minimum sentences for gang recruitment

The Georgia House of Representatives passed legislation Monday imposing mandatory minimum prison terms for gang recruitment. The bill, which originated in the state Senate, would require judges to impose prison sentences of at least five years on those convicted of recruiting gang members.

Seven year old wins Georgia State Wrestling Championship

Hartwell native, Knox Payne, is now a Georgia Wrestling State Champion, after winning it all in Perry, Ga., on March 5. Payne is in just his second year of wrestling and competed last year in the state competition in the 6U division, but was quickly eliminated after losing both matches.

State Senate passes educational voucher bill

The state Senate Monday approved a bill that would provide Georgia students residing in low-performing school districts $6,000 to spend on private school tuition. “This is a money-follows-the-child bill,” said Sen. Greg Dolezal, R-Cumming, who sponsored the “Georgia Promise Scholarship Act.
