Best sports team at Hart County

Hart County High School’s most anticipated sports team (in my opinion) started off its season last week. The team faced two opponents in one night and emerged victorious against both of them. With the amount of talent on their roster, I imagine the Hart County Volleydogs are in for a big season.

The Dawg Bark: Is fairness worth the hassle?

State high school associations divide up the schools in their state by classifications in order to try to create fairness between the schools.  Schools are divided by the number of students enrolled.

Tradition matters in college football

Here we are just three short weeks away from my favorite time of the year — college football season — but it doesn’t feel like most years. Following college football news lately is turning me into an old curmudgeon but I’m sure plenty of you can relate. Things just ain’t like they used to be.

The Dawg Bark: Hopefully barking up the right tree

As you may have noticed, I have not had many bylines in the main section of The Hartwell Sun over the past couple weeks. This is because I have asked to exclusively cover sports for the foreseeable future.

Common sense should rule in enforcement of new ordinance

Last week, after months of discussion and debate from the public, the Hart County Board of Commissioners approved a short-term rental ordinance which could potentially penalize (in fines and licensing status) homeowners for hosting unruly guests at their Airbnb, VRBO, etc.

Buc-ee’s had to be born in Texas

The ultimate Texas insult is “All hat and no cattle.” I am not sure how many cattle Arch Alpin III and Don Waskey owned—if any—in 1982. But I can tell you the Texans had a humongous herd of guts and vision when they founded Buc-ee’s.

Remembering some playful mischief

Pranks. I love the playful mischief of a harmless practical joke. And last week, I got pranked pretty well. Cantaloupe? Summertime is bounty-from-the-garden time. When I stopped by my friend’s office, Adam asked, “Would you like one of our cantaloupes?” “Sure,” I said.

Best of Hartwell keeps getting better

Another Best of Hartwell edition has come and gone and we, once again, were blown away by the participation and enthusiasm this community showed. In this, our sixth year of holding the contest, voters set another record for turnout after shattering the previous mark in 2021.
