Parade brings Christmas spirit to Hartwell

For the first time in two years, Hartwell’s favorite holiday tradition was back and better than ever on Dec. 8 as the Hartwell Christmas parade rolled through downtown Hartwell. The parade, which was presented by the Hart County Chamber of Commerce, commenced at Hart County High School at 4 p.m.

Board of Ed. to ‘opt-out’ of floating homestead exemption

On Monday, the Hart County Board of Education voted to begin the procedures of opting out of the floating homestead exemption approved by Georgia’s voters back in November. Amendment 1 (HB 581), which passed by nearly 63 percent of voters in the general election, is slated to become law on Jan.

The Hart County Board of Commissioners kicked off their regularly scheduled meeting Dec. 10 by recognizing the work of four county employees who are scheduled to retire at the end of this month.

Lady Dogs push their winning streak to four

After starting the season with a loss, the Lady Dogs have won four straight games since with their most recent win coming on the road at Oglethorpe County. On Nov. 26, Hart traveled to Oglethorpe County to take on the Lady Patriots.
Sophmore guard Kurston Curry posted 39 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and six steals in the past two games to elevate Hart to a 58-43 win over Oglethorpe and 68-55 win over M.L. King at the Pro Elevation Thanksgiving Classic at Duluth High School.

Dogs win two straight in back-to-back days

The Dogs piece together back-to-back wins in back-to-back days on the road at Oglethorpe and against M.L. King. On Nov. 26, Hart traveled to Oglethorpe County to take on the Patriots. The Dog carried a 25-12 lead into the half and was playing very well defensively to start the game.

The Mat Dogs continue to stay red hot as they knocked off Stephens County at home to win their third straight match. On Dec. 3, Hart hosted the Indians of Stephens County for Teacher Appreciation Night.
The Timbers home located at 137 E. Howell St. in Hartwell will be one of the five residences on the annual Christmas Tour of Homes Dec. 14 presented by the Hartwell Service League. The Queen Anne Victorian home at 137 E. Howell St. was built in 1896 by Charles Kidd, and stands as a cherished Hartwell treasure.

One night in November of 1976, 33-year-old Frankie Carnes allegedly visited a beer joint in the Cokesbury area. He was later at Smith-McGee Bridge with a large quantity of money on him, for an unclear purpose. Then he never came home.
