Corps permits to be discussed by property owners group

A local group of property owners is hoping to get some answers next week about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ plan to raise dock and shoreline permits by more than $300, and as much as $660 in some cases, starting in January 2020.

The factory floor at Tenneco was mostly quiet Friday, certainly quieter than how Thomas Newman remembers it from his 28 years working there when it was owned by Monroe Shocks.

Elusive alleged arsonist nabbed in South Carolina

Authorities captured a Vanna man on Tuesday who was wanted for arson. James Colby Chastain, 25, of Vanna, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Columbia, S.C. on Tuesday, according to Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland.

Little Japan catches fire, blaze guts building, damages salon

The owners of a popular Japanese restaurant in downtown Hartwell say they have no plans of letting a fire that gutted the establishment on Aug. 9 keep them from reopening as soon as possible. Treena Nguyen, co-owner of Little Japan, 113 Depot St.

Aug. 15, 1990 — Low water pressure hampered firefighters’ ability to control a warehouse fire on North Forest Avenue. The old Savannah Valley Egg Company plant, used as a warehouse to store egg cartons and egg handling equipment, caught fire around 10:30 p.m..

A popular Japanese restaurant in downtown Hartwell caught fire early Friday, rendering the location and the business next door it as total losses. The Hartwell Fire Department was dispatched to the restaurant at 113 Depot St. shortly after 12:30 a.m. Friday morning.
