Home heating assistance available for elderly, homebound

Ninth District Opportunity, Inc. will be assisting elderly and medically home-bound adults in Northeast Georgia with their heating bills this winter. 

Households in which every member is age 65 or older or is medically due to health reasons may apply for assistance with their heating bills beginning on Nov. 1. The assistance will consist of a one-time payment of $400 by check to the home heating suppliers. Eligibility is based on income. 

Documentation verifying  age for everyone in the household, all household income within past 30 days, social security numbers for everyone in home, citizenship and the most recent heating and electric bill are required to qualify.

The Home Heating Help for Elderly and Medically Homedbound program will serve people in Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Dawson, Elbert, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White counties.

No appointments can be made until the phone lines and website open at 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1. No walk-ins will be allowed. Appointments will be scheduled until March 31, or until all funds are exhausted. The general public may apply for this assistance on Dec.  2.
