City’s bid for post-Christmas fishing event comes up short

The city of Hartwell came up just short in a vote that would have brought a Santa-themed fishing event to town, according to Jason Ford, Economic and Community Development Director. The event hosted by fishing retailer Berkley fishing is called  “What does Santa do after Christmas?

HARTWELL HOLDS CHRISTMAS PARADE

There was hardly a seat available for a mile along Franklin Street by the time the annual Christmas parade got under way in Hartwell on Sunday, Dec. 12. Hartwell families enjoyed the return to a normal parade after a couple of at least slightly abnormal events.

First responders sent to 14 wrecks, 3 DUIs in 1 day

In just one day, Hart County’s law enforcement responded to 14 wrecks and three DUIs, with five of the wrecks categorized as “serious.” The accidents on Tuesday, Dec. 14 started early in the morning and went throughout the day into the evening.

School system reacts to threat posted in bathroom

Students, parents and faculty were on alert at Hart County High School on Friday, Dec. 10, after a potential threatening note was found on campus. According to authorities, the note was written on a piece of paper found in a girl’s bathroom. It was discovered on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Hartwell’s AARP managed to stay alive through a pandemic that shuttered many organizations like it, and is determined to continue its work as a force for good. AARP chapters across the state of Georgia suffered from the pandemic and soon collapsed due to numerous circumstances their members faced.

Late band director leaves musical mark on HCHS

Former Hart County band director Ron Jonson’s contagious love for music left a legacy of music educators impacting the Hart County band program to this day. Jonson passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the age of 78.

City authorizes $500 bonuses for all employees

After Monday’s City of Hartwell council meeting, the group announced it was authorizing Christmas bonus checks worth $500 to all employees, full time and part time. Mayor Brandon Johnson said the bonus “had been on our minds” for some time.
