County officials to look at ordinances, roads

Hart County Board of Commissioners’ officials are setting their sights on several policy changes, improving roads and potentially courting new manufacturing businesses in the new year. Board chairman Joey Dorsey told The Sun recently the commissioners need to review and update several ordinances.

Firefighter arrested on theft charges

A Hart County firefighter allegedly stole more than $3,000 from a local fire station, Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials say. Nicholas Benjamin Leard, 38, of Lavonia, was arrested and charged with five counts of felony theft by taking on Jan. 4.

City eyes more growth in 2021

Hartwell mayor Brandon Johnson is looking for Hartwell to rebound in 2021 after a year in which COVID made progress difficult. “We thought 2020 was going to be our year, but with COVID, that overshadowed a lot of things,” Johnson said. “We did really well all things considered.

Man faces charges in deadly crash

A Hartwell man is now facing vehicular homicide charges for allegedly being under the influence of drugs when his truck collided head-on with a car in November 2019, killing the driver of the car. Gregory Luke Carnes, 23, of Hartwell, was indicted by a Hart County Grand Jury on Dec.

Sheriff sworn in for new term

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland, who was re-elected to serve the office he has held since first elected in 2000, was sworn in to office Tuesday morning by Hart County Probate Judge Merry Kirk. Hart County deputies were also sworn in to their positions.
