Volunteers sought to pack supplies

An area ministry is looking for help loading a shipping container with medical supplies bound for Haiti.

Local woman aids paralyzed dogs

Every Tuesday and Friday, Tiffany Counts loads up her three foster dogs for the  85-mile drive from Martin to Spartanburg, S.C. There, under the care of  Dr. Patrick Mornane of Critter Care Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, the dogs are regaining the ability to walk on their own.

“You’re probably going to have a sore arm, and you may feel a little tired for a day or so,” MedLink nurse Trish Jones told Hartwell resident Lou Ann Farrar on Friday, Jan. 15 before injecting Farrar with the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests: Jan. 5 • Johnny Ray Mathenia,  31, 427 Red Leaf Road, was arrested and charged with two counts of terroristic threats and acts, disorderly conduct, third-degree cruelty to children, criminal trespass and obstruction of an officer.

FFA competitor

Hart County High School FFA competitor Ashlyn Floyd exhibited her heifers at the AG Georgia Farm Credit show last weekend at the Jackson County Ag Center. She won her Angus class, then won Grand Champion Angus and lastly won Grand Champion Supreme Heifer for the entire show.

Powell eyes virus, elections in session

The Georgia General Assembly will face new problems this year according to State Rep. Alan Powell, R - Hartwell. The Georgia legislature will be looking at both election reform as well as vaccine distribution as top priorities.

VFW namesakes remembered

Patrick Wireman, the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Hartwell, wanted to find the burial site of the namesakes of the local chapter — Enoch and Knox Scales — so he went looking. “We wanted to find out who Enoch and Knox were, as much information as we could,” Wireman said.

Liquor license, camping fees set

The Hart County Board of Commissioners has a new member and a new chairman and Payne’s Creek Campground has a new rate schedule. Michael Bennett was sworn in and assumed the seat to represent District 1 on the board at Tuesday’s first meeting of 2021.
