1965: A plantation Pipeline helicopter was forced down in a field in the Bio Community.
The “copter” had hit a power line.
The pilot was patrolling the line area and apparently had gotten too low.
The pilot was not injured and only minor damage was done to the “copter’s” landing gear.

•Terry Lee Brewer, 30, of Hartwell, was arrested and charged with DUI.
•A woman was arrested and charged with theft by taking.

Mental health hotline a positive step

Last week, we covered an important new service soon available for Georgians and Hart County residents, a mental health crisis hotline.
The 9-8-8 direct line will operate just like 9-1-1 and send the caller directly to a trained National Suicide Prevention Lifeline counselor.

Girl becomes county’s first female Boy Scout

On June 4, Hartwell’s Scouts BSA (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America) troop 5344 welcomed Evie McCurley to its ranks – the first girl in Hart County to do so.
Evie, 10, successfully made it into the troop in early June, and is now a fully integrated scout with the other boys in the troop.

Hart County Historical Society reopens museum

The Hart County Historical Society (HCHS) reopened the Hart County Museum on Friday, June 24 for the first time since it was forced to close by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The HCHS plans to have the museum open on Fridays between 2 and 5 p.m. and hopes to expand the operational hours moving forward.

Industrial Building Authority approves $283 million bond for Haering Precision

The Hart County Industrial Building Authority signed a bond resolution that will allow Haering Precision to borrow $283 million.
Industrial Business Authority attorney Bob Ridgway said the action was similar to a refinance for Haering, but the IBA provides the assets.

Georgia State Patrol Post 52 introduces new commander

Lavonia — A familiar face has taken command of Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post 52.
Sgt. 1st Class Richard Camran Fleming, who was one of the troopers who opened the post in 2015, was promoted to commander June 16.
“It’s an achievement,” Fleming said.

A Monday collision at the corner of S. Jackson and W. Gibson Streets, pictured above, resulted in no serious injuries according to officials.

On Monday, June 28 there was a two-car collision at the intersection of S. Jackson and W. Gibson Streets, just short of the Coin Laundry on the corner. No serious injuries were reported.

Hartwell celebrates Pre-Fourth

The annual Pre-Fourth Extravaganza took place in Hartwell on Saturday, arguably the most notable festival weekend each year.
A record amount of more than 160 vendor booths attended the parade and market portion and a similarly large crowd made its way to Hartwell for the festivities.
