Circa 1935. Soup kitchens. Bread lines. Unemployment almost 25 percent. The Great Depression had America’s stomach gnawing on its backbone. Jobs were hard to come by, but the two youthful brothers always found work.

BOC focuses on residential growth in comprehensive plan

On Nov. 22, the Hart County Board of Commissioners looked to strengthen Hart County’s ability to maintain “its rural heritage” through the Hart County 2022 comprehensive plan in a work session, taking aim at stemming residential growth as the main focus.

Festival of Lights to begin Saturday

The new Festival of Lights event is coming to Hartwell this weekend on Dec. 3 at Railroad Street Park where a splendor of lights will deck the halls for all to enjoy this Christmas season.
The McGee Home, pictured above at 77 Cedar Lane in Hartwell, is one of six unique properties featured on the Dec. 10 Christmas Tour of Homes sponsored by the Hartwell Service League. The tour offers spectators a look at some of the area’s iconic homes, provides a lesson in Hartwell’s architectural history and raises money for children’s literacy in Hart County.

Christmas Tour of Homes returns Dec. 10

The Hartwell Service League’s Christmas Tour of Homes is back this year. Six beautifully decorated homes will be featured on the tour date of Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Planning commission recommends subdivision annexation

Hartwell’s planning and zoning commission voted Tuesday to recommend to the city council the annexation of the 274-acre parcel at the site of a proposed subdivision between Liberty Hill and Fairview Roads in Hartwell.

Hoops teams go 3-1 at Billy Wade Classic:

Hart County basketball went a combined 3-1 at the Billy Wade Classic at Clark Central High School on Nov. 22-23. The girls went 1-1 dropping their first game to Athens Christian, 63-54 and then rebounded against Cedar Shoals winning 56-45.

Hartwell Twisters strike gold at the Winter Warm Up

The Hartwell Twisters traveled to Dahlonega, Georgia for the Winter Warm Up meet on Saturday, Nov. 19 and struck gold, as five girls placed first in five different categories. Head coach Shellye Ayers’ squad worked all through the summer and it all led up to last week’s tournament.

Hart County football’s defensive coordinator Taz Dixon was inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this month. Dixon was in the weight room with the Hart County football team when a strange number came across his phone.

Dogs split home opener

Hart County Basketball split against the Red Raiders of Madison County, as the girls won, 56-37 and the boys fell in overtime, 70-65. The boys and girls hosted their home opener against the Madison County Red Raiders on Thursday, Nov. 17 to begin a new season.
