Last week The Hartwell Sun reported on the conditions and mismanagement of Nancy Hart Memorial Park, located just outside of town on Royston Highway. The Hartwell Sun found 34 graves without a plaque, and 32 of them were past the average time it takes to secure a headstone.

Campground controversy

Tempers came to a boil over discussions surrounding Paynes Creek Campground during Tuesday’s Board of Commissioners meeting. Contentions first arose as the board members were discussing bids put in for the contract of cutting grass at Paynes Creek Park.
Early voting is underway for the Hart County Board of Education’s ESPLOST. If approved, the upcoming ESPLOST will be the sixth edition in Hart County and is expected to collect over $30 million.

Six Lady Dogs earn All-Region honors for basketball

One senior, three juniors, one sophomore, and one freshman make up the six Lady Dogs who were honored by the coaches in Region 8-AAA. Junior guards Dakota Phillips and Alexis Walker were the lone Lady Dogs to make first team all region within the region.

Lights cause the Racket Dogs to fall to Elbert

Failing stadium lights cause the Racket Dogs to struggle and fall at home against rival Elbert County. Things were looking promising for the boys’ team until it got dark. “Our boys started off really well,” said Dogs head coach Cheryl Tierney.

Diamond Dogs continue to struggle after 0-4 start

The Diamond Dogs continue to struggle, dropping both games to Elbert at home Feb. 15 and on the road at McIntosh on Tuesday. Hart hosted the Blue Devils of Elbert County for the first home game of the season at Saye Field.

Dogs earn the three seed after comeback win over Hebron

The Hart County boys basketball team lost to Stephens County Feb. 15, but was able to overcome Hebron on Friday, earning the Dogs the No. 3 seed in the state tournament. The Dogs took on Stephens County to determine who would advance to the region championship.

The Region 8-AAA runner ups season ends after loss to Dawson

The Hart County Lady Dogs beat Oconee, but lost to Hebron in the region championship. They were the No. 2 seed out of Region 8-AAA but Dawson County upset Hart at home to end their season. Hart opened up the region tournament by taking on Oconee County on the Warriors home floor.
