Heartbroken for my former home

While thirty-three of my forty-six years on this Earth have been spent as a resident of the great state of Georgia, from 2010-2023 your editor lived in Florida’s capital city of Tallahassee where he worked under three governors including Charlie Crist, Rick Scott, and Ron DeSantis.

A Dream Come True

In the final minutes of the greatest rivalry in college football, I couldn’t think of how proud a man I called Pepoppy would be. If you know my family, you will know that almost everyone is a Georgia fan. It made sense though as my family moved to Watkinsville, Ga.

Watching my old man cry

My father, Ron Fargason, has never been much of a crier. In my 46 years on this Earth, I’ve seen my 76-year-old dad cry a total of three times. The first two instances are obvious choices.

Losing a piece of our history

The chorus of Bryan Adams classic 1985 hit Summer of ’69 starts off by saying, “those were the best days of my life.” The Hartwell Sun’s lead graphic artist Vickie Baskins always has a smile on her face when you ask her about that summer in question.

One year at The Hartwell Sun

I cannot believe it has already been a full year since I took over as the sports writer for The Hartwell Sun. But it almost didn’t happen. A little over a year ago, me and The Hartwell Sun’s Dawson Baker worked together during that time for another business in Hartwell.

Baptism

Have you noticed; the gospels show John baptizing. The gospel writers do not explain why John is baptizing. They expect the reader to know the process of baptism and why John is doing it. Where did John get the idea to fully immerse people in water? Notice John is from a priestly lineage.

America, America, God Shed His Grace on Thee

These are very perilous times! The reason I continue to write about my concern for America is because I love this country so much and because I see little evidence that the average American has any idea of the immediate and incredible danger in which we find ourselves.

Local News is Good for Business

It’s no secret that recent years have been tough on small businesses and on newspapers. A bipartisan bill, the Community News & Small Business Support Act, that has been introduced in Congress would offer relief to both newspapers and local businesses.

Racetracks and Racers

When I was a child my father and I would sometimes go to automobile races at various dirt tracks in the area. We attended races in Toccoa, Hartwell, Lavonia and Banks County speedways in Georgia along with Anderson, Greenville-Pickens and Westminster Speedways in South Carolina.
