Seeking research on the dreaded FAS

I am old. I know I’m old. The calendar, my back and hip, my hearing, memory and my teeth and even my wife tell me so. I know I’m not unique though; everyone, if they’re lucky, gets to do this. So at times I fight back a little.

History preserved by forward thinkers

Last week we wrote about the  restoration and reinvigoration taking place at 611 West Howell Street in Hart County. We’re unsurprised but pleased to see members of our community going the extra mile to ensure Hart County maintains its history.

Reminiscing on my marriage with Tom

For those of you who don’t know, my husband Tom is in the nursing home. He was admitted in February 2019, so it’s been three years. Of course the first year was hard. Thankfully we didn’t know what we had coming! And 2020 and 2021 were the most difficult years of our lives. . .however. . .

Finding my valentine through football tickets

E mma and I were young, 18 to be exact, and in love. We were still getting to know each other but it was all starting to blossom.

Lessons in Faith: Love is dependent upon God

Every February we become excited about our current love, potential love, love in general. We sing songs that portray our feelings of love. We watch more romantic comedies.

Words on paper

I have always been a reader and a writer: most all of my life a reader and more recently a writer. Had to get some experience in life before I could write about anything much. Guess I was busy writing other things. I began reading The Hartwell Sun at about age 6.
My parents’ first Valentine’s Day was celebrated in 1946, 11 days after they were married in the house adjoining Ichauway Store in Baker County. Dink NeSmith had hitchhiked home from World War II to propose to Marjorie Vines. They were married for 52 years, until he died in 1998.

The bridge leading to their first Valentine’s Day

With each clunk of my boots on the wooden planks of Ichawaynotchaway Creek’s Erector’s Set-like steel bridge, it was as if I had stepped back in time. I counted them. Seventy-six clunks. I closed my eyes and imagined what the soldier was thinking 76 years ago.

We all need some patience

For the last few days I’ve been running into a couple of words over and over.  One of them is patience. We all know that lack of patience can result in difficult, even bad, situations. There are lots of people in Hartwell nowadays without patience.
