Growing With Work and Chores

I grew up on a farm and as everyone knows, farms require work. They don’t run themselves nor do they wait for the work to be done. Everything has a season. I was first drafted to work on the farm when I was about eight years old. I worked in the field, hoeing and picking cotton and bell pepper.
One of the most-photographed landmarks in Wayne County is the 124-year-old brick building in Gardi. Around 1940, Troy Fore Sr. purchased the iconic structure in which he operated The Altamaha Apiaries. In 1969 his son, Troy Jr., established Fore’s Honey Farms. Troy became an influential leader in the beekeeping industry.

By the time I got there in August of 1971, Troy Fore was already at 361 W. Plum St. in Jesup. But the same magnetic force drew us to the Wayne County Press (WCP). On June 30, that “magnet” sat—in his seersucker suit—two pews in front of me at Troy’s funeral.

For the past few years, the college football landscape has changed tremendously. From NIL where players are making more than some coaches, to the new playoff format that started with four teams and has recently expanded to 12.
