Sheriff: Plans for new Hart Co. jail progressing

Planning for the new Hart County jail is nearly complete and Sheriff Mike Cleveland expects the Board of Commissioners to vote on an option at a meeting next month. In July, the commissioners  selected Charles Black Construction Company, Inc. as the construction manager-at-risk for the jail project.

Hartwell police chief Anthony Davis said his department isn’t exactly doing anything flashy lately and keeping the order in Hartwell has been a relatively smooth process. “We’re just doing day-today work,” Davis said, “My folks just come in, do their job and go home everyday.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests: Sept. 14 •Javier Perez-Cristobal, 19, of Toccoa, was arrested and charged with DUI and speeding 67 in a 55. Sept. 15 Jimmy Edwin Savage, 51, of Hartwell, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Hartwell Helps expo returns to YMCA

The Hartwell Helps Expo is set to return Oct. 3 to the Bell Family YMCA. The event hosted by the Hart Interdenominational Ministry has been offering health care resources and information to Hart County residents every year since 2015, with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic.

Husband, wife open pair of Ridge Road stores

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Sept. 9 to officially open two new businesses owned separately by husband and wife duo, Terri and Melissa Black. The new businesses are located at 78 Ridge Road, where they operate out of the same building. Storage Master is owned and operated by Terri Black.

Hartwell resident Darlene Nixon’s writing career hit another milestone with the release of her newest novel based upon her mother’s life. Nixon began her writing career a decade ago when she published her first novel and has since continued to write about subjects that are meaningful to her.
