The Hart County High School football players put on their pads for a two-day camp in Habersham County on June 22 and 23. The team competed against  Morgan County, Habersham Central and Madison County at the camp.

Soccer players gather to practice through the summer

The Hart County soccer program is holding 7-on-7 scrimmages throughout the summer to keep middle and high school athletes engaged in the sport. “It’s just an opportunity for us to keep working on building our Hart County soccer community and culture,” head boys soccer coach Benjamin Hudson said.

YMCA, high school keeping campers active

Kids worked on their skills at the new volleyball camp at Hart County High School and at basketball camp at the YMCA this past week. There will be no camps next week, but the YMCA will host a Positions Soccer Camp on July 5-8.

Special Olympics launches summer program

Every Thursday at the Hart County Botanical Garden at 6 p.m., Hart County Special Olympics (HCSO) will host walking and yoga for adult athletes who are looking to get out and compete, but more importantly, spend time with others in a post-pandemic world.

# Throwback Thursday

1965: A plantation Pipeline helicopter was forced down in a field in the Bio Community. The “copter” had hit a power line. The pilot was patrolling the line area and apparently had gotten too low. The pilot was not injured and only minor damage was done to the “copter’s” landing gear.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests:   June 21 •Terry Lee Brewer, 30, of Hartwell, was arrested and charged with DUI. •A woman was arrested and charged with theft by taking.

Mental health hotline a positive step

Last week, we covered an important new service soon available for Georgians and Hart County residents, a mental health crisis hotline. The 9-8-8 direct line will operate just like 9-1-1 and send the caller directly to a trained National Suicide Prevention Lifeline counselor.

Girl becomes county’s first female Boy Scout

On June 4, Hartwell’s Scouts BSA (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America) troop 5344 welcomed Evie McCurley to its ranks – the first girl in Hart County to do so. Evie, 10, successfully made it into the troop in early June, and is now a fully integrated scout with the other boys in the troop.
