‘Close to Home’ exhibit to debut at Art Center

The Hartwell Art Center announced the opening of “Close to Home,” the first exhibit of the 2023 season that showcases works by local artist Ganine Giorgione Derleth. The exhibit starts Thursday, Jan. 5 with the opening reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hartwell Art Center.

Corps ends drought operations on lake

On Dec. 21, the Army Corps of Engineers issued a release stating that Lake Hartwell is no longer under drought operations due to “rain events over the Savannah River.

It was just a normal summer day for 16-year-old Ramsey Gaines, working with kids at the Bell Family YMCA in Hartwell until he felt like there was something off. “I had some issues where my right side was hurting a lot,” Gaines said.

Dogs to take on Devils in Christmas Showdown

Hart County gets ready to host Elbert County on Friday, Dec. 23 for a night of celebration of history and possibly victories. Before the Lady Dogs tip off, Hart County will honor the decade teams that left their marks in the school’s history books forever.

Four players and one coach from Hart County had the opportunity to participate in the 2022 Athens Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Star Game at Clarke Central High School on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Seventeen Dogs named All-Region

The Region 8-AAA coaches met on Tuesday, Dec. 14 and selected 17 Bulldogs to receive All-Region honors. Four Dogs made the first team All-Region honors at their respective positions.

Mat Dogs host only home meet, fall twice

On Wednesday, Dec. 14 the Mat Dogs hosted East Jackson County and Crescent High School of South Carolina in their lone home match of the season. The Dogs fell 57-22 to East Jackson and 45-22 to Crescent. East Jackson took on the Dogs first after coming off a tough loss to the Crescent Mat Tigers.

Hart 4-H’ers Compete in Cloverleaf District Project Achievement

Thirty-nine 4th, 5th, and 6th grade 4-H’ers from Hart County participated in Cloverleaf District Project Achievement, or DPA, at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center several weeks ago. This event had the students give an informative speech on a topic of their choosing.

1955: The Hartwell Sun reported that despite near freezing temperatures, thousands of people lined Hartwell’s streets for the annual Hart County Christmas Parade making it one of the largest-attended parades yet held.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests:   Dec. 14 •Ricardo Stowers, 44, of Hartwell was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, DUI, open container in vehicle, and speeding. •Keeshawn Blackwell, 26, of Lavonia was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
