Common sense should rule in enforcement of new ordinance

Last week, after months of discussion and debate from the public, the Hart County Board of Commissioners approved a short-term rental ordinance which could potentially penalize (in fines and licensing status) homeowners for hosting unruly guests at their Airbnb, VRBO, etc.

The ultimate Texas insult is “All hat and no cattle.” I am not sure how many cattle Arch Alpin III and Don Waskey owned—if any—in 1982. But I can tell you the Texans had a humongous herd of guts and vision when they founded Buc-ee’s.

Remembering some playful mischief

Pranks. I love the playful mischief of a harmless practical joke. And last week, I got pranked pretty well. Cantaloupe? Summertime is bounty-from-the-garden time. When I stopped by my friend’s office, Adam asked, “Would you like one of our cantaloupes?” “Sure,” I said.

Best of Hartwell keeps getting better

Another Best of Hartwell edition has come and gone and we, once again, were blown away by the participation and enthusiasm this community showed. In this, our sixth year of holding the contest, voters set another record for turnout after shattering the previous mark in 2021.

Vinson Brown is loving life

On a pristine lake front property, Vinson Brown, 88, looks out from his porch to watch the two bald eagles that congregate to his house on a weekly basis in search of food.

Llamas add adventure to the farm

Llamas get a bad rap as spitters. Yes, if provoked, they will spit. If a llama’s banana-shaped ears go back, and it starts gurling, watch out. I should have known better than to get too close to Georgette’s new baby, Dalai. But in 25 years—just once—have I had a water-hose shower in the barnyard.

Something old could help a new problem in the school system

The Hart County Board of Education recently voted to approve the purchase of about 67 acres of land off Bowman Highway. The land, located between the Agriscience Center and South Hart Elementary could be used for a number of possibilities.
