Poll shows support for liquor by the drink

A recent social media poll  conducted by The Hartwell Sun shows overwhelming support for liquor by the drink sales in Hart County outside of city limits, a measure that could be added as a referendum ballot initiative in the November election, but some residents still oppose the idea.

July 2, 1920 — A convoy of U.S. Army troops passed through Hartwell and were greeted with a warm welcome party. A crowd estimated to be about 2,000 people from the surrounding areas gathered in Hartwell to greet the Bankhead National Highway Transcontinental Convoy.

Lack of proper paperwork stalls Oglesby decision

The District 1 seat on the Hart County Board of Commissioners has been empty at meetings since November 2019 because the governor’s office says it has not received a certified copy of commissioner R.C. Oglesby’s indictment from the district attorney or attorney general.

Kemp extends COVID-19 social distancing rules

June 25, 1920 Hartwell’s post office saw a major change in 1920, opening the door for the city to receive a federal building. The postmaster at the time received notice from the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C. that the Hartwell office advanced to second class.

Restrictions ease, limited conditioning remains

Restrictions on sports teams across the state are continuing to ease, but student-athletes are still required to practice social distancing and aren’t allowed to scrimmage as preseason conditioning continues for many teams amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Cooling bill assistance available

Households in Hart County that have not received heating or cooling assistance since November 2019 will again be eligible for the aid through Ninth District Opportunity, Inc., beginning on July 1.  Eligible applicants can contact Ninth District’s scheduling system starting at 12:01 a.m.

Three new sailboats adorn downtown Hartwell

Three new sailboat sculptures are standing in downtown Hartwell.  A sailboat at the corner of Franklin Street and Forest Avenue, in front of Market 50, was donated by a group of more than 30 couples and individuals who wanted to erect one with a theme of friendship.

Site off hazardous list, back on market

A former industrial site in Hartwell that was on the state’s Hazardous Site Inventory is off the list and back on the market and a local Realtor is hoping it will be the home of another job creating business for Hart County.
