Welcoming football’s return with open arms

Hungry football fans can get their first taste of the sport this weekend right here in Hartwell. Hart County High School’s Herndon Stadium will play host to the Lake Hartwell Gridiron Classic on Saturday, a mixed 15-team scrimmage of Georgia and South Carolina pigskin teams.

My journalist friend’s prayer for 2021

The year was 1973. Robert was 22.  I was 24.  I used to joke and call us “boy publishers.”  But Robert Williams was a veteran compared to me.  He’d always wanted to be a newspaperman.  That’s why he dropped out of UGA to become the publisher and a partner in The Blackshear Times.

Who says donkeys are dumb?

With all the summer rain, our pastures are green and Ireland-like lush. Our animals don’t need extra feed, but we ring a cow bell twice a day. The early and late ring-a-lings are the signal that snacks await in the barn.

Amid recent reports of sexual abuse against children here in the area, we think it’s an important time to remind folks about two victim advocacy groups that we are fortunate to have right here in the area: the Harmony House and Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence.
