Bill Schafer
William George "Bill" Schafer, 83, of Lavonia, passed away Friday, March 5, 2021 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on February 11, 1938 in Rome City, Ind., he was the son of the late George William Schafer and Margaruitte Adams Schafer. Mr. Schafer received a Masters in Education from Ball State University, and was a shop teacher and coach. He was also a retired sales representative for Goodheart-Wilcox. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Friendship Force of Lake Hartwell.
Survivors include his wife, Susan McArthur Schafer of the home; three sons: Steven Schafer of Naples, Fla., Brad Schafer (Jennifer) of Roswell, Ga., and Eric Rassel (Christy) of Spartanburg, S.C.; two daughters: Sue Schafer of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Ann Sorsdahl (Mike) of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Harold Schafer (Kandi) of Rome City, Ind.; nine grandchildren: Amanda Sorsdahl, Alyssa Norman (Trey), Alan Sorsdahl, Abby Freeman (Michael), Emma Schafer, Will Schafer, Erin Rassel, Olivia Rassel, Megan Rassel; and three great-grandchildren: Sophie Norman, Noah Norman, and Mabry Freeman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margie Schafer-Leiter.
A Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Rafael Castaño officiating. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. at the Broadlawn Memorial Gardens, 5979 New Bethany Road, Buford, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society c/o Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 1009 Benson St., Hartwell, GA 30643.
