National Day of Prayer set for May 7, with changes

The National Day of Prayer is an annual event in which Hartwell traditionally comes together on the courthouse square to pray.

Things will be a bit different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing standards in place statewide.

“Instead we are suggesting that at noon on May 7, everyone step outside into God’s creation, lift their hands to the God of the universe, praise His holy and blessed name and pray,” said Judy Voight, a member of the Interdenominational Women’s Buble Study, organizers of the local Day of Prayer. “May we open our hearts to pray for our nation, our president, our state and local government, all our medical employees and industry, our law enforcement and military, our families, those have to work to provide necessary supplies and those affected by COVID-19.”

Organizers are also asking churches to ring their bells at noon that day.

This year’s theme is “Pray God’s Glory Across the Earth.” The theme comes from Habakkuk 2:14, which reads, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the seas.”

Organizers have asked local churches to get involved and are encouraging everyone to go outside and pray at noon on May 7.

“It’s more imortant than ever that every one of us pray that day,” Voight said.
