The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), Division for Exceptional Children, has selected Lockaby Powell of Hart County to receive the prestigious “Award of Excellence,” recognizing outstanding academic and extracurricular achievement throughout his high school career.
Powell was formally honored at a ceremony hosted by the GaDOE Department of Federal Programs, Division for Exceptional Children, at the Towers building in Atlanta on April 30. The event brought together educational leaders, school administration, GLRS leadership and staff members who supported his nomination.
Powell, known to many as “Lock,” has built a well-rounded high school resume marked by leadership, dedication and service. A multi-sport athlete, he competed in football for four years, basketball for four years and tennis for three years. He served as a captain on the football team and earned numerous recognitions, including the Male Hart and Hustle Award from The Hartwell Sun, the 12th Man Award, the Sportsmanship Award and the Acts of Encouragement Award for football. He was also nominated twice as a Georgia Army National Guard Positive Athlete.
“Lock represents the very best of what we hope for in our students—hard work, leadership and a genuine commitment to making a positive impact on those around him,” said Superintendent Jennifer Carter. “His accomplishments are truly outstanding, and this recognition from the Georgia Department of Education is well deserved. We are incredibly proud of Lock and look forward to seeing all he will accomplish in the future.”
Beyond athletics, Powell has demonstrated strong leadership and academic commitment. He is a member of the Chick-fil-A Academy, Leadership Hart Youth and serves as a PBIS Ambassador. Academically, he earned an Academic Award in Healthcare and was recognized as a Healthcare Pathway Completer. He was also selected by his peers as a Senior Superlative, earning the distinction of “Most Unforgettable” and was also most recently selected as the Prom King.
Powell is actively involved in his community through Sardis Baptist Church, where he participates in the Men’s Ministry and youth programs. He also gives back by serving as a camp counselor for Camp Sardis during the summer.
This recognition from the Georgia Department of Education highlights Powell’s exceptional character leadership and commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom.
