Sheriff's office warns of bond scams

The Hart County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a recently-reported scam involving bonds for inmates at the Hart County Jail.

Sheriff Chris Carroll said the sheriff's office has received "multiple reports of individuals calling family members of inmates in the Hart County Jail and falsely claiming that the inmate now has a bond."

"The caller then requests payment over the phone using a Green Dot card or other forms of gift cards in order to have the inmate released," Carroll said. "This is a scam. The Hart County Sheriff's Office will never request payment over the phone using gift cards or prepaid cards for the release of an inmate."

Carroll said those who receive a similar call should hang up immediately, not send any money and not provide personal information.

"If you have been contacted or believe you may have been a victim of this scam, please contact the Hart County Sheriff's Office at 706-376-3114," Carroll said.
