A new career in writing recently landed a hometown man back in Hartwell after nearly nine years outside the community.
Drew Dotson came aboard The Hartwell Sun’s staff this week as a part-time staff writer, covering community news and local municipalities, among other topics.
The 27-year-old, who is a 2011 graduate of Hart County High School, returned to his hometown after graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Religion. He also spent some time at Georgia State studying journalism.
“Drew is an energetic young reporter with a sound set of local knowledge already. We are happy to have him aboard,” publisher and editor Michael Hall said.
Dotson’s writing experience started in college, he said, while writing academic essays. After college, the avid Bulldog sports fan started a blog to share his opinions, mostly about Georgia football, and followed the recruiting trail as well.
Hoping to find a job in the journalism world, Dotson searched the Athens area for writing-related work to no avail.
“Then I saw that this job opened up and I was like ‘Man this would be perfect, back in my hometown and getting my foot in the door into the journalism field,’” Dotson said. “It’s exciting because I have a lot of connections. I know a lot of people here.”
Even during his blogging days, Dotson couldn’t get away from home. He once interviewed highly-touted Hart County High School tight end Cane Berrong, who was once on Georgia’s recruiting radar before he committed to Notre Dame, for his UGA football blog.
Writing isn’t the only thing Dotson enjoys, though. He’s also a musician and most recently played bass in a Christian-based band.
Drew is married to Cindi Dotson. He is the son of Marc and Christy Kaufman.
