Hart County Charter System
The Hart County Charter System successfully conducted an Emergency Response Drill in collaboration with local emergency services. This comprehensive and realistic exercise took place on Friday, July 31, at South Hart Elementary School, demonstrating our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and the entire Hart County community.
The Hart County Charter System partnered with local law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical services to carry out this drill. The exercise aimed to improve our collective response capabilities in the unlikely event of an active shooter or other emergency situation at any of our facilities.
Superintendent Jennifer Carter highlighted the importance of preparedness and coordination during crises.
“The safety of our students and staff is at the center of every decision we make,” said Superintendent Carter. “Training alongside our local emergency responders through exercises like this allows us to continually refine our safety protocols and ensure we are prepared for a wide range of situations. These collaborative drills strengthen our response efforts and reinforce the partnerships that are so critical during an emergency. We deeply appreciate the dedication of our law enforcement officers and first responders, whose ongoing support helps us provide a safe and secure environment for our students, staff and community.”
During the drill, participants engaged in a planned scenario that replicated a real-life situation involving an active shooter and victims within the elementary school, creating an environment that required quick thinking and seamless communication among all involved. The exercise provided an opportunity to evaluate existing emergency plans, identify potential areas for improvement and reinforce the importance of coordination between school staff and emergency responders.
Currently, the Hart County Charter System has the following safety measures in place to ensure a safe learning environment:
• Centegix CrisisAlert – The district has partnered with Centegix since 2021 using the CrisisAlert system. Staff members are equipped with wearable badges that can instantly alert administrators, as well as local law enforcement, to a threat and its location.
• OpenGate Weapons Detectors – During the 2024-2025 school year, weapons detection systems were installed at all five Hart County schools as part of a continued focus on campus safety. At the high school and middle school, all students and visitors are screened upon entry. At the elementary schools, visitors are screened before being granted access to the building.
• Monitoring Systems – Established monitoring systems and procedures are designed to identify and address potential safety threats. This includes overseeing student behavior on school-issued devices. Additionally, all schools are equipped with cameras to enhance security.
• Controlled Access – Our schools ensure a secure environment through controlled access points, allowing only authorized individuals to enter school premises. A full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) is stationed at each campus during the school day. Exterior doors, as well as classroom doors, are locked during the school day. Additionally, many of the exterior and interior doors on all campuses are equipped with SALTO mini-locks that can only be opened with employee badges.
The Hart County Charter System expresses its gratitude to the dedicated professionals from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and Homeland Security, Hart County Sheriff’s Office, Hart County Emergency Management Agency, Hart County Fire Department, Hartwell Police Department, Hartwell Fire Department, Georgia State Patrol, Med-Trans Life Flight and the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, whose expertise were instrumental in the success of this drill. Their contributions and support further demonstrate the power of collaborative efforts in safeguarding our community.
We also want to express our gratitude to the parents, students and community members who have supported our commitment to safety and participated in various aspects of the exercise. Their understanding and cooperation have been crucial to the drill's overall success.
