First-graders at North Hart Elementary are spreading “a little sunshine” and smiles to residents at Hart Care Center through the form of letter writing.

North Hart Principal Haley Smith said the idea popped up during a Google Hangout meeting with first-grade teachers while they discussed the emotional impacts of social distancing. One teacher suggested writing letters to residents at Hart Care Center, since they are unable to receive visitors during the novel coronavirus related closures.

The teachers then reached out to students and parents who wanted to participate.

“Essentially, the goal was to bring a little sunshine to what could otherwise be a difficult time emotionally for them,” Smith said. “The families who participated feel that it was a valuable experience and allowed for them to spread a little joy.”

Smith said they heard back from one of the nurses who said the residents enjoyed reading the letters and that it brought smiles to their faces.

The school hopes to continue writing letters and expand it to other grade levels within the school, Smith said.
