Bo and Tina Howard want to add a sailboat statue in front of the Hailey Building in downtown Hartwell to honor veterans.

The corner was where Greyhound buses would pick-up and drop-off soldiers during World War II,
according to Tina.

“My dad came home on leave after his basic training and he was going to be shipped off overseas, but didn’t know where. His dad took him to the Hailey Building at the old Greyhound bus stop and, as he waited for the bus, he saw the courthouse clock strike 9  o’clock at night,” Tina Howard said. “He wondered if he would ever see that again or when he would see that again. I’m sure a lot of solidiers thought the same thing as they left from that corner.”

The Howards have put $650 towards the memorial so far, but are asking the community to help cover the rest of the $1,800 cost involved. This memorial would honor all branches of the military.

The sailboats are part of a public art program created by Leadership Hart class of 2015 that is now led by the The Art Center.

Donations for the memorial can be sent to the Hart Regional Art Center. For more information contact Tina Howard at 404-375-5626.
