Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) Commissioner Amy M. Jacobs visited Hartwell Elementary School and South Hart Elementary School June 24 to see DECAL’s Rising Kindergarten Summer Transition Program in action.

Jacobs was joined by DECAL team members Meghan McNail, Devon Porter and Liz Young as they met with educators and observed summer learning experiences designed to help Georgia’s youngest learners build confidence, strengthen foundational skills and prepare for a successful start to kindergarten.

“The Summer Transition Program gives children the additional support they need to enter the classroom ready to learn,” said Commissioner Jacobs. “We are grateful to the teachers, school leaders and families who make these programs possible and help children begin the school year with confidence.”

DECAL offers two Summer Transition Programs during June and July: Rising Pre-K and Rising Kindergarten. Both programs provide high-quality instruction focused on language, literacy and math and are designed to help reduce the achievement gap.

Rising Pre-K serves children who are eligible to attend Georgia’s Pre-K Program during the upcoming school year and are dual language learners. Rising Kindergarten serves children who are eligible to attend kindergarten in the upcoming school year, including children who did not attend Georgia’s Pre-K Program or who need additional support before entering kindergarten.

Georgia’s Pre-K Summer Transition Program is free for eligible students who reside in Georgia. Families agree to send participating children for 6.5 hours of instructional time each day for the full duration of the program.
