Birthday parade honors former teacher

A former Hart County Teacher of the Year got a special birthday surprise on April 22 when a group of former colleagues, students, friends and family put on a birthday parade for her.

Bonnie Granville, who turned 65, is staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic and was unable to celebrate normally because of social distancing. So the volunteer firefighters at the Reed Creek fire station led the parade along with former principal Barbara Setchel and current assistant Hart County High School principal Cecil Maret.

More than 30 people and 13 cars participated in the parade that Granville, the 2009-2010 Hart County Teacher of the Year, watched from her porch as people came to her front yard with signs and balloons wishing her happy birthday.

Granville started her teaching career at Mount Olivet and Airline elementary schools in 1977 and taught locally for more than 30 years, eventually working at North Hart Elementary School.

Former students and colleagues also flooded Granville’s social media pages with happy birthday wishes.
