Depot Street was originally pegged for only a patch job immediately following the completion of the big revitalization project currently going on, but thanks to an opportunity for some money shifting, the whole street will feature a fresh new surface much sooner than anticipated.
City manager John Herschell made that announcement at the Hartwell City Council meeting Monday night.
“We have an opportunity to completely tear out all of Depot Street, come in and repave it from scratch, get all the grades, all the elevations perfect for drainage,” he said. “I did not think a month ago that we would have this opportunity, but we started looking as we were improving and going up Depot Street.”
Herschell said the contractor approached him and highlighted the $86,000 credit to patch the street included in the project and recommended that the city use that money for repaving.
